We all have that one friend who has suddenly become super invested (literally) in cryptocurrency and joined the hype in trading these digital currencies. The boom started last year and blockchain technology has advanced quickly ever since with the surge in interest. Those who wish to bring their digital assets to the moon tend to exemplify certain unique traits, so here are 5 ways to identify a crypto bro.

1. Trading crypto is their whole identity

It is impossible to shut a crypto bro up once they start talking about cryptocurrency. They will talk about it from the start to the end of the meal, and it is all they ever talk about: which coin is the best, what is the next hype stock to get, and so on. Don’t be surprised if you see that they have changed their Instagram bio to something related to cryptocurrency and their Instastories filled with crypto content. Trading crypto has become such a big part of their lives that it has even become a huge part of their identity as well. Are you really a crypto bro if don’t talk about it all the time?

2. They are never off their phone

Be it to check their stonks every few minutes or to discuss something with another crypto bro, these guys are never off their phone. They are usually prepared with a portable charger in case their phone runs out of battery outside and they miss a good deal, and their screen time has significantly increased since embarking on this crypto journey. The way they interact socially while out with their friends will change, easily distracted by their phone and not entirely paying attention to the conversation (unless it is about crypto of course).

3. They will try to get people to join them

A part of not being able to shut up about crypto is trying to recruit people to join them in their newfound interest. Sometimes it is almost cult-like and as if they are trying to convert others to join their new faith. Some of the tactics used include enticing them with screenshots of their profits made, trying to create the fomo in their Instastories, and just spamming massive amounts of content about crypto on social media that you simply just can’t escape it.

4. Dropping all the crypto terms

After trading crypto currency, crypto bros have their vocabulary bank expanded with loads of crypto terms. To make them look like they know what they are doing, they will drop all these exclusive terms and slangs used in crypto trading - sometimes overzealously. Some of the top favourites include HODL (hold on for dear life) referring to holding on to your investments even when it dips to wait for it to pick up and make profits eventually, and to the “moon” which refers to optimistic huge future returns.

5. They are awfully quiet when they lose money

What happens when a crypto bro makes a wrong investment decision and actually loses money? They become awfully quiet and you will definitely notice. When asked about their recent investments and how they were doing, they become evasive giving vague answers or saying they decided to “diversify their portfolio” by investing in something else. There are also some who try to make it seem like a learning lesson and make a series of Instastories or Facebook posts talking about it as well.

No offence was intended against any crypto bros and this was exaggerated for satirical purposes. Nonetheless, crypto bro is quickly becoming a stereotype of young males who wear too much cologne and are chasing their first Lambo, and there are even articles to differentiate crypto bros and blockchain pros who take investing more seriously. Maybe being a crypto bro is just a phase and a new interest like any other, but whether it stays remains to be seen over the next few years.
